What makes this gardener happy

The tulips are starting to push out of the ground!

And, the leaf buds are starting on the lilacs.

That ground cover around the tulips? I have no idea what it is. I got it from Peavy Mart's "We probably killed this. If you think you can revive it, it's yours" table. I was hoping it'd fill in some green in the new gardens last year, but apparently it's taking off like gangbusters.

  1. Isn't it funny how sometimes plants need a freeze to make them come alive? I miss the real change of seasons.

  2. Three years ago, when we were visiting San Diego, my cousin's friend rented a car and drove us to this town where they were having an apple festival. He told is it was rare, because this was one of the few towns in the area with an altitude high enough to get cold enough; and apple trees need to freeze in order to produce apples. My cousin and I laughed our head's off, because every Canadian either has an apple tree or knows somebody who has an apple tree in their back yard.
