Eat Your Heart Out, Birders

Look who has been hanging out Where the Fur Flies!

I can't find a nest, but I hear somebody tweeting and singing most of the time.  This guy tends to spend a fair amount of time yanking worms out of my gardens, or surveying the land from the corner of my roof.

It's time to dust off the telephoto lens, because I HAVE BIRDS!

  1. I just hung a birdfeeder on my deck two weeks ago and have a gazillion birds. However, am now reconsidering said decision. A) Lots of bird poop; B) Lots more squirrel interest; and C) I've heard, attracts vermin. As in rats, and foxes, and mountain lions and things I generally don't want in my yard!

  2. So jealous! I've had bird feeders up for years! This being a new subdivision, though, the birds just haven't wanted to come. I have noticed lots of poop recently, since they started showing up, but I'm OK with that for now. Also, we also don't have squirrels here... not enough trees yet. Also, other than the stuffed variety, there are no rats in Alberta. Or Mountain Lions. There are foxes, but they generally stay out of the city.

  3. I love birds! I know they make a mess and attract squirrels (and possums and raccoons, apparently) but it's so fun to watch them come and eat at the feeders.

Here in DC, I have robins, cardinals, juncos, finches, buntings and tons of sparrows. Oh, and doves (which are just better dressed pigeons as far as I'm concered).

I haven't seen any hummingbirds as yet. I hope I'm not so far in the city that they won't come. They're one of my favorites.

  6. I had no idea you had no birds. Congratulations! That bird has a beakfull. So are you without grey/gray squirrels and moles/voles? I sure hope so. CH is in a full blown war with the little beasties and CH is winning!

  7. Hey, RR! No, not a one grey (gray?) squirrel around here. I've seen them out East, but never in Alberta. In some of the older areas or town, there are red squirrels, but they haven't moved out to the newer subdivisions yet. Not enough trees.

Moles and voles are also in Alberta, but not that I'm aware of in the cities. Mostly, we just have mice infestations crop up when neighbouring farmers' fields are razed and replaced with new subdivisions.
